Take them to the vet as soon as possible for a check up. The worse thing is to have underlying problems surface when it’s beyond redemption.

What is Aflatoxin?

Aflatoxins are toxic substances produced by certain moulds that can grow on food, including corn and nuts. They’re found in highest concentrations in corn and peanut butter, so can be fatal to dogs if they ingest them over time. Preliminary studies indicate that the liver damage caused by aflatoxins in dogs is similar to the damage caused by high doses of aluminium. The symptoms can include diarrhoea, ataxia (loss of muscle control) and vomiting. The exact cause for the liver damage can be seen as malnutrition, which may have been caused by a lack of appetite in the first place.

Aflatoxin symptoms include

  • Ataxia (the loss of muscle control) or weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Enlarged liver and spleen (a symptom also associated with heavy metal poisoning)
  • Jaundice (yellowish eyes, skin, gums, inside lining of the eyelids) due to the build-up of bilirubin in the blood stream. This is not always evident in dogs because they lack sufficient lipase to digest fats properly.
  • Permanent Live damage
  • Death

If you experience these symptoms after having contact with this product or an animal that has eaten this product, you should contact your healthcare provider.

If your pet has consumed the recalled product and is experiencing these issues, please contact your veterinarian.

It is also possible for pets who may be infected with Aflatoxin, to be viewed as healthy with little to no symptoms.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
