What is Salmonella or Listeria?

The symptoms of salmonellosis include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and fever within eight to 72 hours after infection. Symptoms usually last for four to seven days. However, it is possible to be infected with Salmonella and not have any symptoms. It is also possible for a patient to be infected with the Salmonella bacteria and not develop signs or symptoms, but to still be able to spread the infection to others.

Salmonella causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or bloody diarrhoea, along with other symptoms such as fever and cramping.

Rarely, it may cause a more serious health problem, such as arterial infections, endocarditis (an infection of the heart muscle), arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

If you experience these symptoms after having contact with this product or an animal that has eaten this product, you should contact your healthcare provider.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhoea or bloody diarrhoea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Pets exposed to contaminated food can be infected without showing symptoms. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and is experiencing these issues, please contact your veterinarian.

It is also possible for pets who may be infected with Salmonella, to be viewed as healthy with little to no symptoms.

Listeria monocytogenes is a dangerous organism that can cause serious illness in people whose immune system is weakened, such as young children and the elderly.

Although healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
